Caskets are made of several different materials such as bronze, copper, stainless steel, and carbon steel. Wood caskets are also very popular. They are made of mahogany, walnut, cherry, oak, maple, and ash.

A vault is an outer burial container that houses the casket. Most cemeteries require that the casket be placed in an outer burial container. A vault serves two basic services: 1) it helps protect the casket from the elements and 2) it keeps the grave from settling. Vaults are most often made of reinforced concrete with an asphalt coating and lined with different grades of plastics and metals.
