'Dixie' was born on June 6, 1924, in Muscatine, the son of Harry L. and Myrtle L. Haney Howell. He was a 1942 graduate from St. Mathias High School, and joined the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He married Murna A. Carter on November 8, 1948, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2004.
Dixie had many jobs in his life, including bartending at Ina Mae's, delivering meat for C.E. Richards and Sons, Innkeeper at the Holiday Inn in Muscatine, and a salesman for Krieger's, Iowa Road Builders, and Farner-Bocken.
Dixie was an avid golfer throughout his life. At age 85, he shot his age, which was quite an accomplishment. He passed his love for golf to his children and grandchildren. He loved his Tuesday morning coffee with his friends at McDonalds.
Dixie will be missed by his children, Tom (Pam) Howell of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, Tony (Deb) Howell, Teresa (Jauquin) Chavarria of Muscatine, and Tim Howell of Wilton; grandchildren, Jordan (Amanda) Howell, Nate (Cassie) Howell, Makahla Howell, Barry Chavarria, Brad Chavarria, Melissa Chavarria, Christina Chavarria, and Jared Howell; three great-grandchildren; and siblings, Elwood 'Roger' Howell and Mary Ann Liddy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and siblings, Robert, Wayne, Don, and Jerry Howell and Norma Hartley.
A truly nice guy and a gentleman! When he drove for MTI, he picked me up at Moline airport to take me to the hospital, and could not have been more compassionate! I always liked dealing with him when I worked at GPC.
My deepest sympathy, Dixie was a great guy and will be missed by many.
Dear Howell Family, I got to know Murna and Dixie as neighbors. They were part of a great group of my mom's friends that also became my friends. I will alway cherish the "driveway time" we spent together. The neighborhood just is not the same without those sweet seniors that welcomed me after my move back to Muscatine. My wish to you is to find comfort in the memories. May the peace of the Lord be with you all!
To the Howell Family, Dave and I are so sorry for your loss. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
RIP DIXIE. I KNEW DIXIE FROM WHEN I WAS 10 AND GRANDMA WAS A HOWELL ALSO. DIXIE CAME TO OUR STORE IN OAKVILLE FOR SALES A LOT AND ALWAYS TREATED ME LIKE FAMILY. A MAN I WILL NEVER FORGET. VERY GOOD PERSON TO LOOK UP TO.
Dixie was a great neighbor dad when growing up in Muscatine. The Howell home was a home where you always felt welcome. Dixie and Murna raised a great family. You'll be missed Mr. Howell. RIP
What a wonderful person. He was a friend to all.
Now he and Murna are reunited in heaven.
May his memory live in the hearts and minds of all of his family and friends.
Ohhhh, the memories from E. 11th St. Such wonderful neighbors and friends were the Wilsons and the Howells. Thinking of each of you Howell kids. Lynne (Wilson) & Ken Reimers
