Shasta, California, Denise Smith and husband, Johnny, of Nichols, and Joseph Flanders and wife, Joan, of Muscatine; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Ann Crosbie of Modesto, California.

I love this photo of Aunt Lou. To me, she was a very gracious, kind person and that just shines through in this photo. I must have looked at it five or six times today, and each time it made me smile.

Aunt Lou was my godmother. When I was a child, she took the time to wrap and send a Christmas present to me, even though she was busy with a large family of her own. It made me feel special, and I was and am grateful. She was a very kind person.

She was also a very good cook. The first time I tasted cauliflower—some sixty years ago--it was in Aunt Lou’s home. She served it whole, covered with a white cheese sauce, and I had never tasted anything so wonderful. To this day, when I make cauliflower with a cheese sause, I think of Aunt Lou.

I am sure most of my cousins and siblings also remember how much fun our Aunts and Uncles and grandparents had playing cards, arguing politics, and just being together. They knew how to have fun!

It is hard to lose a parent, even when they have lived a long life as Aunt Lou did. My thoughts tonight are for all of Bernie and Lou’s family. Sending love, Mary

Dear Flanders Family,
So sorry for your loss! I have very fond memories of times spent at picnics, parties, and family gatherings. Our folks were friends with many of the St. Mathias parish families. Linda and I were classmates from grade school through high school. I remember a chartreuse coat that Lou wore to mass, it complemented her beautifully. She always had a smile and friendly words. God bless you all!
