I’m proud to say I was a student of Fr Henle’s back in the 80s for Metaphysics. He made us memorize everything saying “you won’t understand now, but someday you will”. He was a genius with an amazing mind, and he was right. Rest In Peace, and rise in glory! Fr Shane Scott-Hamblen, ThD
Rev. Robert Henle ST LOUIS, Mo. - The Rev. Robert J. Henle, S. J., 91, of St. Louis, Mo., died Thursday, Jan. 20. Services will be Tuesday at St. Frances Church in St. Louis. A memorial Mass will be at a later date in Muscatine. The Rev. Henle was born Sept. 12, 1909, the son of Edward M. and Mary Ann Hauber Henle. He attended elementary school at St. Mathias School. The Henle family moved to Los Angeles, Cal., where he graduated from Loyal High School. In 1926 he enrolled at Creighton University in Omaha. The following year he entered the Society of Jesus at Florissant, Mo. Survivors include two nieces, Mary Miller and Patricia Grosjean, both of Muscatine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
I have fond memories of using Father Henle's Latin textbooks at San Antonio's Central Catholic High School (Society of Mary brothers) back in 1952. I've recently had occasion to go back to his books to review Latin grammar because my wife's taken up Latin. What excellent books they are! - Amazed at his later career - he has a Wikipedia biography. - I'm rsrichmond on gmail
Dear Mike, How wonderful to find your post. (And how stupid of me not to have checked back here before.) I love Fr. Henle's Latin textbooks. I use them in homeschooling, and they are used by many homeschoolers. I belong to a group that encourages homeschoolers to use them. I just have so often wondered whether Fr. Henle left any notes or papers regarding those textbooks or Latin in general. Is there anyone who worked with him still about? What might be just papers to someone else would be a treasure to me! Did he leave behind any Latin books?
I am the great nephew of "Uncle Robert" in Muscatine, Iowa.
I was searching for information on Uncle Robert's career and drifted into his obituary where I came across your post.
Feel free to reach out to me with regards to your thoughts or questions.
If anyone from Fr. Henle's family, or anyone who worked with him in the Latin textbooks series, reads this message, please post here. I would like to correspond with you.
With his textbooks, Fr. Henle has been and continues to be a light for generations of Latin students.
Requiescat in pace.
