Billy Burke MUSCATINE, Iowa - Billy Burke, 83, of Muscatine, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Carrington Place in Muscatine. Funeral Service will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Casketbearers will be Cindy and Dan Litwiler, Joann and Keith Johnson, Jim Burke, Jerry Burke, David Venghous. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the combined units of the V.F. W Post 1565 and the American Legion Post No. 27. Following the interment, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the New Hope United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 22, 2008, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Billy. Mr. Burke was born on August 30, 1925, in Ainsworth, the son of Raymond and Mabel Kurtz Burke, Sr. He married Genevieve M. Maylone on November 20, 1948, in Muscatine. He is a veteran serving his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 and from 1951-55. During part of his enlistment he served on the USS Orion AS-18 Sub Tender where he maintained submarines providing the necessary welding repairs. He was a welder on the first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus. He was a member of the VFW and attended the New Hope United Methodist Church. He treasured the hours he spent by himself, with his family or with his friends, fishing and camping on the Mississippi River. He was owner of Burkes Metal Repair from 1966-2002. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Genevieve Burke of Muscatine; two children, Joann Johnson and husband, Keith, of Appleton, Wisconsin and Cindy Litwiler and husband, Dan, of Muscatine; three grandchildren, Emily Sprangers and husband, Brad, of Wisconsin, Sarah Sheets and husband, Brian, of Wisconsin, and Courtney Litwiler of Muscatine; three great-grandchildren, Burke, Lillian and Elliott; two step-grandchildren Angie Watznauer and husband, Jay, and Alison Reynolds and husband, Aaron; six step-great-grandchildren, Colton, Andrew, Drake, Tanner, Gracie and Parker; a sister, Carma Jean Ervin of Atalissa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary; three brothers, Raymond Burke, Jr., Marvin Burke and Robert Burke.
