Maynard was born on February 23, 1940, in Nichols, the son of George A. and Alice Marie Bekker Stych. He married Joyce Kay Courtney on September 10, 1960, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Maynard spent most of his working life at McKee Button Company which took he and his family to Atlanta, Georgia and then Greenville, South Carolina. Upon returning to Muscatine, he joined the family building business with his brothers. He finished his working life in sales, at M&M Ford and Ron Alpen Ford. Maynard was an honest salesman who said he would never sell a car he wouldn't let his daughter drive.
He was a member of the Elks and Ss. Mary Mathias Catholic Church.
Maynard was a master griller; the weather was never too bad for a steak on the grill. He enjoyed having people over for dinner and entertaining. He also enjoyed boating and spending time with his family on the water. Through his retirement he enjoyed playing poker at area casinos, as it was his favorite hobby. Maynard loved people and never met a stranger.
Maynard spent many days trying to convince one of the CNAs to push his wheelchair to the front door so he could make his great escape!
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Joyce, of 63 years, of Muscatine; two children, Todd Stych and wife, Sara, of Sunrise Beach, Missouri, and Stephanie Anson and husband, Doug, of Muscatine; grandchildren, Jennifer Salazar and husband, Joey, of Muscatine, Corey Stych of Muscatine, Emily Green and husband, Jacob, of Portland, Oregon, Sharise Hartsock and husband, Ryan, of Muscatine, and Kassidy Harrison and significant other, Tito Nunez of Muscatine; great grandchildren, Trey, Noah, Sophia, Alexandria Salazar, Liam and Saige Hartsock, Paisley Harrison and Ezekiel Nunez; siblings, Paul Stych, Keith Stych, Rosemary Hollatz and husband, Jim, of Honolulu, Hawaii, Nancy Young and husband, Tom, of Florida, Ken Stych and wife, Kim, of Florida; and special family friend, Chris Soltwedel.
He is preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Allison Stych; siblings, George Stych, Rita Phelps, Jeanette Phillips, Wayne Stych, Ron Stych, and Donna Conisbee.
A special thanks to Connie and Jen from St. Croix Hospice who treated Maynard with dignity and respect in the last days of his life. A big thanks to Lutheran Living where Maynard called home and to all the loving staff at Lutheran who cared for Maynard with compassion and love, especially nurse Cora and favorite aid, Afton.
I remember my cousin, Maynard, saying that his stubbornness was to be blamed on the Dutch! My dad loved visiting with him to buy a car, mostly for the conversations. Not sure that Maynard ever gave him a deal!
Joyce, I just saw this. We are sorry that we didn't know. Maynard was such a nice guy.
Joyce and family, We are so sorry for your loss! Your family is in our prayer . Maynard was a wonderful guy! RIP Maynard! Thoughts and prayers for your family.

Mom always enjoyed going to visit Maynard. She told me he was her protector. She wrote in her life story about shutting the old truck door on his barefoot and taking his toes to the doctor to sew them back on. She also stated she his ground his thumb in the food grinder another doctor visit and her trip to the doctor when he accidentally knocked her front teeth out. I guess they were together a lot. She loved him a lot. Always the biggest smile.
Maynard had polio in high school. I remember one day he asked me to get him some Pepsi! I was about 4. I walked over to the grocer by St. Mary's School and hauled home a 6 pack of Pepsi for him. He was always there for me when Jim was traveling overseas, knew who to call if the furnace quit, who to get the plumbing straightened out. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
Oh Maynard you will be so missed!! My heart aches for Joyce and all the family. He was so ornery but would put a smile on your face!! Tara Korthaus, Scribe

Joyce, Todd, Steph, and the rest of the family. ~ I enjoyed all my visits with Maynard over the past years when returning to Iowa.. I only wish there were many more. I am sorry I cannot make it to the funeral to see everyone. Hopefully, when our home is rebuilt and my body heals I can visit again.. I guess I will have to visit Maynard in heaven. __ In my thoughts and prayers, Nancy
Maynard was my next door neighbor for years, and I enjoyed him immensely, meeting in the yard and talking, he was always interested in what i was doing with my gardening, and helped after surgery by taking trash and recycling to the curb and back for me. He was a great guy.
