David 'Dave' William Roby Obituary

DAVID ‘DAVE’ WILLIAM ROBY

MUSCATINE, IOWA – We lost a great man, a loyal feeder of the birds, an avid NASCAR, Cubs & Hawkeye fan, our Mr. Fix-It and a true friend to so many. David “Dave” William Roby, a lifelong resident of Muscatine, passed away on March 1, 2025, surrounded by the family he so dearly loved. He can finally hear with clarity, walk for miles, lift his gun to hit clay targets, drive freely and eat endless shrimp to his desire.

Dave was born to Dwayne and Bernice (Tiedeman) on May 30, 1941, in Muscatine. He had one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Bob Havel of New Mexico. Dave graduated from Muscatine High School in 1959. He worked several years for Iowa Electric/Alliant Energy then later for the County Sheriff’s Office as a Transport Officer. He very much enjoyed talking to the inmates and being a positive influence to them.

Dave was a true outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing with his father, uncle, wife, son, grandson and many special friends. In addition, he spent countless hours on the pitcher’s mound playing unlimited arc slo-pitch softball. Dave’s family was his reason for living but a very close second was his love for competitive trapshooting. He was a lifetime member of both The Amateur Trapshooting Association and the Iowa State chapter as well. Dave was an accomplished shooter. A few of his most cherished wins were at The 1978 Otter Creek $1000 Shoot, 1995 Budweiser Handicap at The Iowa State Shoot, 1999 Iowa State Parent & Child Singles Champion with his son, Jeff and The 2013 Grand American Handicap Champion. The last time the old guy broke 100 targets consecutively was in 2021 at the young age of 80yrs old.

In addition to his many trophies, Dave was a devoted dog trainer and could often be found with a dog at his side. He took great pride throughout his adult life teaching Britt, Rusty, Maggie and JJ to be his loyal hunting companions.

He and his loving wife, Dyann were married on May 31, 1980. This year would’ve marked their 45th wedding anniversary. Dave showed his love by making Dyann coffee every morning. They created beautiful memories fishing and mushroom hunting, trying new restaurants, traveling to southern states and spending time by the ocean in Destin, Florida during the winter months. One of the most memorable trips they took was to Alaska. Dave talked about that experience long after their return. Together, Dave & Dyann built a family that he was so very proud of. Left to share endless stories, laugh at their fond memories and forever cherish the love they were given by their dad are their children; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Ben Peters of Bettendorf; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Karrie Roby of Fruitland; daughter, Christy Roby and her partner Paul Marquez of Wilton and daughter; Wendy. Dave was a wonderful grandfather to his five granddaughters; Cassidy Conway, Destiny Williams, Hanna McConnaha, Julissa Williams and Maura Peters, and one grandson; Lake Roby along with a new great grandson; Xion. Outside of his family, Dave leaves behind many special friends that helped make his life whole. You know who you are and we thank you for loving and “putting up with” him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Dave’s favorite Friday night meeting spot, The Pearl (101 W Mississippi Drive Muscatine, IA) from 1-4pm on Saturday, March 29th. Please wear denim or camouflage attire and grab a tall Captain & Coke in Dave’s honor. Donations may be made in Dave’s memory to a fund the family is setting up to assist in supporting youth trapshooting at schools in Muscatine County. You can donate at the event or by Venmo @Dyann-Roby-2. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Roses are Red, Violets are Blue - Your smile will be missed but not more than you!

XOXO
