DOUGLAS EUGENE MATHES

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Douglas ‘Doug’ Eugene Mathes, 58, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at his home.

Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m., on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family, in care of Shawna Tabor, for final expenses. Online condolences may be made at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

Funeral Service will be held at 6:00 p.m., on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the funeral home. Jim Walker will officiate.

Doug was born on July 18, 1966, in Muscatine, the son of Judy Fischer Mathes. He married Shawna Tabor on June 3, 2000 and together they had four children, Steven, Hannah, Haley, and Jacob. They later divorced.

He worked for the Muscatine School District for 38 years. He then retired to enjoy his hobbies of woodworking, NASCAR, watching the St. Louis Blues hockey, reading books, yardwork, 18 wheelers, and working on cars with Jacob. He loved his dogs, Aria and Rocky and was looking forward to his first grandson coming in July of 2025, River James Schoer.

Doug is survived by his children, Steven Boardman, Hannah Mathes, Haley Mathes, and Jacob Mathes, all of Muscatine; his mother, Judy Mathes of Muscatine; friend and mother to his children, Shawna Tabor and husband, Tom; sisters, Pamala Granados and Jane Walker and husband, Jim; Niece Sarah Stuefen and husband, Collin, and their son, Marshall; longtime friends Les Hunter and Virgil Bierman.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Cedrick and Juanita Fischer; mother-in-law, Debbie Boardman; and special friend, Lucky.
