Born on July 1, 1947, in Burlington, Iowa, Jack was the son of Jack F. and Laura Krususki Dougherty. He married the love of his life, Susan Peterson, on November 23, 1968, in West Burlington. Together they shared nearly six decades of love, faith, and unwavering devotion to family.
Jack earned a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Iowa in 1969, and later an MBA from St. Ambrose University in 1995. A dedicated and accomplished professional, Jack spent 35 years at Kent Feeds, rising to the role of Vice President of Commodities. He continued his passion for agricultural work at Stutsman’s in Hills, Iowa, where he served for 15 more years as a purchasing manager.
A pillar of his church community, Jack was a member of Calvary Church for over 41 years. His faith was the cornerstone of his life. He served in numerous roles including Deacon, Awana Leader, Sunday school teacher, member of the Missions Board, and Gideons International. He lived generously and wholeheartedly, often saying, “You can’t out give God.”
Jack’s joys were many—he was rarely seen without a book in hand and loved history, puzzles, gardening, and baking. A passionate runner, he completed five marathons. He was a proud Chicago Cubs fan and passed his lifelong love for the Cubs to his daughter and his love of golf to his son. He was a devoted Iowa Hawkeyes supporter and deeply patriotic, always treasuring the celebration of Independence Day.
Jack leaves behind a legacy of faith, integrity, and love. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan; their children, Amy Fortenbacher (Mark) and Timothy Dougherty (Jennifer); six cherished grandchildren: Josef (Cynthia), Benjamin, Luke, Joshua, Braydon, and Brianna; and three adored great-grandchildren: Yazmine, Evelyne, and Melodye. He is also survived by his siblings, David Dougherty (Ellen), Pam Moreno (Bob), and Susan Keys (Greg); his step-siblings, Karen Mynatt (Larry) and Dale Russell (Dixie); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack F. Dougherty and Laura (Krususki) Dougherty Russell; his stepfather, Al “PeeWee” Russell; and his in-laws, Marjorie and Roger Peterson.
Jack Dougherty will be remembered for his steadfast faith, generous spirit, and deep love for his family and community. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
