Jessie Wheeler Jr. Obituary
JESSIE WHEELER
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Jessie Vernon Wheeler Jr., 68, of Muscatine, Iowa, passed away at home surrounded by family. He was a man best known for his deep love of fishing, and his heart forever belonged along the banks and backwaters of the Mississippi River, where he felt most at home.
Jessie was born July 21, 1957, in Muscatine, Iowa, to Jess Sr. and Donna (Johnson) Wheeler. He graduated from Louisa-Muscatine High School in 1975. Following graduation, Jessie worked at Brown’s Fish Market and later at New Boston Fish Market before settling in Columbus Junction, Iowa, where he dedicated many years of service to Tyson Foods.
Family and friends will remember the stories Jessie loved to share — tales of the big catch, the one that got away, and the laughter enjoyed around campfires after long days on the water. Those who knew him best knew a patient and hardworking man who was happiest with a fishing pole in his hand.
When he wasn’t on the river or at work, Jessie could often be found at the local racetrack helping his boys with their race car. Whether turning a wrench, changing a tire, or watching proudly from the fence, he was always there to lend a hand and offer quiet support.
Above all, Jessie was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose greatest pride was the time he spent with those he loved.
Jessie was previously married to Roxane Phillips, with whom he shared three children.
He is survived by his eldest son, Jason Wheeler of Wilton, Iowa; his daughter, Jo Renea Daufeldt (Rusty) of Letts, Iowa; and his youngest son, Gaylon Wheeler (Tashia) of Conesville, Iowa. He is also survived by his grandson, Chase Wheeler, and granddaughter, Kylee Wheeler; two step-grandchildren, Kylie and Kennedy Daufeldt; his remaining brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his faithful dog and companion, Dutchess, who was by his side for 18 years; his brother, Tommy Wheeler; and his parents, Jess and Donna Wheeler.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Jessie will be laid to rest at Harrison Cemetery beside his parents. The Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.
In honor of Jessie, the family invites you to spend a quiet moment by the water and cast a line into the Mississippi River in his memory. It was there he found peace, purpose, and joy. Though his boat has made its final trip downstream, his spirit will forever ride the current of the river he loved. Like the river itself, his memory will continue to flow through the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
