Joseph Michael “Mike” Garrett
July 11, 1954 – April 24, 2026, Joseph Michael “Mike” Garrett, 71, passed away on April 24, 2026.
Born on July 11, 1954, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mike spent most of his childhood in Belle Chase. He later settled in LaPlace, Gonzales, and ultimately Muscatine, Iowa. An instrumentation and electrical technician, he attended and taught at ITI Technical College and worked throughout Louisiana, Texas, and Mexico.
Mike was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. The pride he exuded for his children was second only to his everlasting love for and devotion to his wife. A lifelong music enthusiast, Mike strove to become ever better at playing guitar. He enjoyed watching The Three Stooges, old Westerns, and women’s basketball—especially cheering for Caitlin Clark during her time at Iowa and Indiana. He also loved his pomapoo, Bébé.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Nancy and Leon Garrett, and his cherished mother-in-law, Janet Anderson.
He is eternally loved and missed by his wife, Lori Garrett; his son, Bryan Rushing; his daughter, Ashley Albritton and son-in-law, Michael Albritton; his grandchildren, Madison Rushing, Jude Rushing, Carmen Albritton, and Julyan Rushing; and his great-grandchildren, Mikey Sonnier and Alison Mougeot; his older brother, Gene Garrett, and sister-in-law, Cynthia Garrett.
There will be a private family graveside service in Greenwood Cemetery. The Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family, in care of his wife, Lori. Online condolences may be made at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.
