Kenneth Miller Obituary

MILLER, KENNETH

MUSCATINE, IOWA – Kenneth, “Kenny” Miller passed into glory on March 13, 2026, at Unity Point Hospital in Muscatine after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease. According to his wishes, there will be no funeral services. The Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences can be left at  Ralph J. Wittich Riley Freers Funeral Home web site:  wittichfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, cards and memorials may be sent to his wife of almost 70 years, Opal A. Miller.

Kenny was born November 15, 1934, in Muscatine, the firstborn of Lucile (Ramer) Miller and Harold K. Miller. Kenny married Opal Shaw on June 17, 1956, at the original Calvary Baptist Church of Muscatine at the corner of 4th and Cedar Street. The couple was blessed with four children: Mike (Amanda) Miller of Seattle, Lynne Miller Smith (deceased), Mitch (Sue) Miller of Taylor Ridge, IL, and Keith (Sherry) Miller of Muscatine. Kenny was proud of his nine grandchildren and their families: Jennifer (Adam) Chapin, Korey (Tara) Miller, James (Anne) Cromwell, Christine Davis, Kristen (Zak) Lincoln, Stacey (Isaac) Anderson, Ryan Robert (Cahleen) Miller, Ryan Mitch (Maria) Miller, and Cameron Miller. Additionally, eighteen great-grandchildren are left to honor Grampa Kenny’s legacy.

Kenny graduated from Muscatine High School in 1954. He was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1957-1959, stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He worked for the railroad(s) in Muscatine over 40 years, beginning as a switchman for the Rock Island Lines in 1959 and retiring as a yard master in 1997 for the Canadian Pacific Rail System.

Although Kenny was a proud railroad employee, he was a family-first man. He and his wife enjoyed their home and special gatherings like camping, cookouts, and just romping with their children and grandchildren. Kenny was the wagon master for the local Good Sam’s Camping Club, and he and Opal wintered in Arizona for many years in their fifth wheel camper. He and his three sons made many memories hunting and fishing and enjoying the great outdoors. In more recent years, Kenny grew fond of golfing in the MP&W and 501 golf leagues at “Muni”, still golfing twice a week in the summer of 2025. He loved his golf buddies like family.

Kenny’s family wants to express their gratitude to the special people who took care of him during his final days: the EMTs,  emergency room staff and the 3rd floor medical team at Unity Point Health in Muscatine, who treated him and his family with love and respect. The family would also like to thank Rock Valley Physical Therapy for helping him in his fight against Parkinson’s Disease.

Kenny was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Carol Ann; a brother in infancy; his daughter; and his brother, Larry Lee Miller.
