Kurt Leo Hirt Obituary
KURT LEO HIRT
LETTS, IA – Kurt Leo Hirt was born on September 5, 1955, in Kitzingen, Germany, to Helene Marie Hirt and Jesse Davis Boney. He passed away on April 14, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and the kind of memories that families tell for generations.
Graveside service will be 10:00 am on Friday, May 8, 2026, in Wagner Cemetery. There will be time for food and fellowship following the graveside at the American legion. The Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences: www.wittichfuneralhome.com
As a young boy, Kurt came to live with his uncle and aunt, Steven and Gabriele Scherer, who quickly became known simply as “Mom and Dad.” Growing up on the family farm helped shape Kurt into the hardworking, practical, and capable man everyone knew him to be.
After graduating from high school, Kurt proudly served in the military from 1974 to 1978 as a Clinical Specialist (91C). When his service ended, he began working for Grain Processing Corporation, where he spent 34 years building a reputation as someone who could always be counted on to get the job done. When he eventually stepped away from GPC, Kurt didn’t slow down. Instead, he started his own handyman and construction service, putting his many talents to work. If something was broken, Kurt could fix it. If something needed to be built, Kurt could build it. And if someone needed help, he was usually already on his way with the right tools.
On October 7, 1978, Kurt married Evelyn Korte. Though the couple later divorced, they created a family together and welcomed two children, Joe and Jenny, sharing many important years. Later in life, Kurt met Jann Siefers, and the two were married on May 27, 2003, in Muscatine. Kurt and Jann shared many adventures together, especially their road trips, where the destination mattered a little less than the journey. They also loved hosting holiday parties, filling their home with food, laughter, and plenty of family stories. Some of their greatest joy came from time spent with their children and grandchildren.
Kurt always had a deep love for farm life. Some of his best memories were working alongside his dad on the farm where he grew up. Later in life, he bought his own farm in 2002 so he could continue enjoying the simple life he loved. A place where there was always something to fix, build, or tinker with.
More than anything, Kurt loved his family. He was a supportive father who always showed up when it mattered. He had a listening ear when his kids needed advice, encouragement, or just someone to hear them out. And when it came to his grandchildren, he was their biggest fan — happily showing up to games, events, and milestones, proud of every single one of them.
Kurt will be deeply missed by his children, Joe Hirt (Rosie) of Muscatine, Jennifer Luu (Sang) of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Jenni Kate Colschen (Jeremy) of Muscatine. He was a proud grandfather to Derek Hirt (Maddison), Lexi Hirt (Raul), Luke Luu, Cambal Luu, Rhys Luu, and Tysin Marie Walker (Zach). He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Jaxon Hirt, Emersyn Hirt, Hailey Walker, and Elanea Walker.
Kurt is also survived by his brother, Daen Hirt (Pia) of Bamberg, Germany, and his step-sister, Valerie Walker (Dave) of Scarborough, England.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jann Hirt; his mother, Helene M. Hirt; his father, Jesse Davis Boney; his beloved “Mom and Dad,” Steven and Gabriele Scherer; and his brother, Rudy Hirt.
Kurt will be remembered as a man who worked hard, fixed just about everything, and loved his family even more than he loved a good project. His stories, his laugh, and his willingness to help anyone in need will be missed, but never forgotten.
