MICHAEL JOHN SIMPSON

MUSCATINE, IA – Michael John Simpson, 50, passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at home surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 15, 1976, in Galesburg, Illinois, Michael was the son of S. David Simpson and Barbara (Dowd) Simpson. He married Terra Murfin on August 7, 1999, in Galesburg, Illinois. Together they had two children, Iden and Maya Simpson.

Surviving is his wife of 27 years, Terra; two children, Iden and Maya; father, S. David (Carol) Simpson; mother, Barbara Simpson; siblings, Michelle (Tim) Swanson, S. James (Naomi) Simpson, Tom (Kim) Fornander, and Allison Fornander; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sterling and Missy Simpson and George and Pat Dowd.

Michael attended Galesburg High School and continued his education at Montana State University for two years, transferring to Purdue University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and creative writing. Michael began working at Galyan’s after graduation and then continued his education at Boise State University. Mike and Terra then moved to the Chicago area where he had the gift of being an amazing stay at home dad while his wife pursued her professional career. During this time, he also had the opportunity to be an adjunct professor of English at Robert Morris University. After moving to Iowa, Michael obtained his teaching license and became a high school English teacher and most recently worked in the Wapello Community School District.

Michael took enjoyment in photography, reading, and writing. In his youth he often loved spending time outdoors whether that was fishing, golfing, hiking, etc. As he got older, he invested most of his time in his children, frequently volunteering his time to their activities. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time talking and laughing with his family and friends.

His visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the funeral home with Pastor Paris White officiating.
