He was a 1944 graduate of Muscatine High School. It was wartime and there was a manpower shortage. Students were encouraged to work part time in a war-related job. Dick worked on the construction crews that built Grain Processing Corporation.

Shortly after graduating from high school, Dick joined the U.S. Marines Corps and served throughout the South Pacific until the end of World War II. After the war, he enrolled at the University of Iowa and earned a degree in mechanical engineering. In 1955 he married Patricia A. Grunder, a marriage that would last 65 years until her death in 2020.

After college, he worked a short amount of time at Grain Processing Corporation before joining the Pillsbury Company where he managed that company's facilities first in Lima, OH and later in Clinton, IA.

After 10 years with Pillsbury, he returned to GPC where he would retire in 1990.

His first job at GPC shortly after startup in the forties was that of maintenance laborer. When he retired, he was plant manager and senior vice president in charge of all plant related operations as well as engineering. He was proud of the part he played in the company's steady and significant growth during his tenure.

He and Pat enjoyed travel, here and abroad, visits to their children in Wyoming and Florida, and winters spent in Florida.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the American Legion, and a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association. He was a past member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Muscatine Country Club, and the Elks.

He is survived by a daughter, Christine Koll Manhart and her husband, Michael, of Fort Lauderdale, FL; son, Cary Koll of Glenwood, IA; daughter in law, Wendy Carlson Koll of Jackson, WY; and a host of wonderful nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son, Craig E. Koll; and sister, Nida Tillman.
