RICHARD (DICK) A. MARR

MUSCATINE, Iowa – Richard (Dick) A. Marr, 89, died on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1st, beginning at 9:00 AM at Zion Lutheran Church, 513 Sycamore Street in Muscatine, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 AM and a luncheon at the Zion Fellowship Hall afterwards. Burial will be in the Mausoleum at Memorial Park Cemetery at 1:30 PM. Pastor Susan Bantz will officiate. The Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Dick was born on December 29, 1936, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the son of Bernard L. (Jack) Marr and Leona Andresen Marr of Clinton, Iowa.

He was a graduate of the Lyons High School Class of 1954 in Clinton. He attended Iowa State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and graduated as the honor graduate of the School of Civil Engineering in 1958. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi social fraternity. Dick received a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa in 1968.

Following graduation from Iowa State, he served in the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander for two years.

He married Evelyn (Evie) Kershaw on September 1, 1957 in DeWitt, Iowa.

Dick was employed by the Muscatine engineering firm, Stanley Consultants, for 37 years until his retirement in 1996. He held numerous positions during his career including, Chief Structural Engineer, Division Head, and Senior Vice President. He oversaw structural engineering projects all over the world in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. After his retirement from Stanley Consultants, he formed Marr Engineering, Inc., and provided structural design services for ten additional years.

Community involvement was very important to Dick and he served on boards of The United Way, Salvation Army, Lutheran Homes, Chamber of Commerce, Muscatine Symphony Orchestra, and Kiwanis Club, among others. He was elected to the Muscatine County Board of Supervisors, serving one 4-year term. He also served as Chairman of the Muscatine County Republican Party.

Throughout his life, Dick enjoyed music and sang in the Zion Lutheran Church choir for more than 60 years. He also participated in Muscatine Civic Chorale and sang with the Elk’s Chanters for 28 years. He played trombone with the Muscatine Symphony Orchestra and the Washington, Iowa Municipal Band.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jackson Lee Marr, and his wife of 67 years, Evie. He is survived by his two sons, Michael (wife Barb) and Craig (wife Ann), his grandchildren Erich Marr, Katie Brueggen (husband Travis), Eve Myers (husband Senibo), Mia Crusto and eight great-grandchildren: Ryan, Alyssa, Avery, Abilene, Royal, Tyson, Zayda and Nova.
