ROBERT WAYNE THOMAS

April 3, 1952 – April 4, 2026

Robert Wayne Thomas, 74, of Muscatine, passed away at Lutheran Living on April 4, 2026, just one day after celebrating his birthday.

A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion Sunday, April 12, 2026, at 1:00 pm. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online Condolence: www.wittichfuneralhome.com.

Robert was born on April 3, 1952, in Muscatine, the son of Wilbert and Dorothy Thomas.

A proud graduate of Muscatine High School, he went on to serve his country as a sergeant in the Iowa National Guard. Following his honorable discharge, Robert embarked on a lifelong career on the road. While he worked for several employers, he spent 37 years as an over-the-road trucker for Newcomb Trucking. Bob was legendary for his dedication to his profession and his vehicle; he maintained the cleanest rig on the road, famously refusing to even wear shoes inside his truck.

Beyond the miles he traveled, Robert’s greatest journey was his family. He was a father to Christie, Jamey, and Jessica. In 2013, he met Melinda Schubick, and together they embraced the joys of a large, blended family. An outdoorsman at heart, Bob loved to tinker in his garage, wash his cars until they shone, and spend time on the water boating with family and friends. He was never one to turn down a nice cold Bud Light in good company. Bob was rarely seen without his dogs; first Amanda, then Bud, and later Millie, all of whom were his constant companions and brought him immense joy. Recently, he and Mindy discovered a new passion for the outdoors, traveling together in the camper they recently purchased.

Bob’s legacy of hard work and laughter will be missed by his partner, Melinda "Mindy" Schubick; his sister, Nancy (John) Venegoni of Quincy, IL; his children, Christie Carlson of Muscatine, Jamey (Magen) Thomas of Muscatine, and Jessica (Matt) Schulte of Cedar Rapids; his bonus daughter, Emily (Greg) Eichelberger of Muscatine; and his 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert and Dorothy Thomas; his grandparents; and his bonus son, Jacob.
