VIOLET MARIE McGOWAN
MUSCATINE, Iowa – Violet Marie McGowan, 84, of Muscatine, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
Graveside Service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Greenwood Cemetery. The Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Muscatine Humane Society. Online condolences may be made at www.wittichfuneralhome.com.
Violet was born on September 2, 1941, to Orland and Rosye (Harris) Preston, and grew up in Grandview with her 11 siblings. She married David McGowan on July 27, 1961, and with him raised his two sons from a previous marriage, Bruce and Allen. They later adopted a third son, Darren.
Violet worked as a press operator at Thatcher Plastics for 35 years, and later also worked as a caretaker. She loved gardening, traveling the country, and staying fashionable. Violet made keeping her house in top-top shape look like the easiest thing in the world, and she devotedly cared for her family as they aged.
She is survived by two sons, Darren and Bruce; five grandchildren; one brother, Darrell ‘Dean’ Preston; one sister, Shirley Lewis; many nieces and nephews; and lifelong friend Nancy McKillip.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David; one son, Allen; her parents; four sisters; and five brothers.
