BARBARA PACE
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Barbara Kathleen Pace, 85, of Muscatine, passed away on Sunday, February 03, 2019 at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City, Iowa.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at the Community of Christ in Muscatine, Iowa. Burial will take place in Harker Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather for a luncheon at Community of Christ following internment.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home in Muscatine. Memorials may be made to Community of Christ in Muscatine.

Barbara Kathleen Freers was born on May 15, 1933, in Iowa City, to Margrette 'Birdie' Freers of Muscatine. She was raised by her maternal grandmother Alice Mabel Dykes Freers and later adopted by her aunt and uncle, Jennie (Freers) and Walter Schmidt. Throughout her life Barbara was blessed to have an abundance of aunts, uncles and cousins who also welcomed her into their families. Barbara had a strong faith and was a life-long member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Community of Christ.

Barbara graduated from Muscatine High School in 1952 and was united in marriage to Harold W. (Sonny) Pace on March 22, 1953, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Muscatine. She lived her entire married life farming, being a homemaker and raising her family on the same farm in the Sweetland area. Barbara was also a school bus driver for over 30 years with the Muscatine School District and had previously worked at the telephone office as a local operator. She was a long-time member of the Muscatine Garden Club.

Barbara was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed gardening, music, camping, fishing and watching barges navigate the Mississippi River. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Harold W. (Sonny) Pace of Muscatine; daughters, Deboraha (Carroll) Howard of Muscatine and Sally (David) Sallee of Wilton; sons, Tim (Konnie) Pace of Muscatine and Andrew Pace of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; eight step-great-great grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Harlan Pace of Franklin Park, Illinois, and David (Valerie) Pace of Roseville, Minnesota.

Barbara was preceded in death by her mother; her maternal grandmother; and adoptive parents.

My thoughts and prayers to you and your family. I had worked with Tim for a few years and we had talked about his mom driving bus, as I was driving bus now too. As they say "it's not the dates on the headstone , but the Dash in between".

CandleI'm so sorry for your loss.
I had her as a bus driver for many years and I can't remember not seeing a smile on her face no matter what kind of day she was having. She always had time for her kids on her routes. I can remember that she would let us call her grandma and I have to say that is what she was. I can remember driving down Hwy 61 going to Davenport and going by and saying that it Grandma Barbs house because snd my mom would ask me how do you know, I would say because there was s her bus sitting there After she retired she would still stop and say hi to you and would now your name. She was a wonderful woman and will be deeply missed by many. RIP to Barber Pace.
